Why Are Vane Pumps So Popular?
You will find vane pumps in a lot of different types of machinery. They’re in soda machines, equipment used in road construction, and in many, many other types of applications. One of the main reasons they’re in demand is that they’re very easy to maintain, long lasting, and reliable. While they are typically used for thicker fluids, such as fuel oil, they can also handle solvents with ease. Since there is no metal-to-metal contact inside a vane pump, it can withstand wear and tear better than many other types of pump.
How Long Should Your Hydraulic Pumps Last?
It can be hard to pinpoint exactly how long you’ll be able to rely on your hydraulic pump, whether it’s a vane pump, a piston pump or a gear pump. You can look at your past experience with a specific type of equipment, but trying to predict a new pump’s longevity is usually nothing more than a guess.
There are, however, a number of factors that will help give you a better-informed estimate. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind.
- Classification – If a pump is labeled “industrial grade,” that’s a good indication it will last longer that one that doesn’t have that label.
- Oil – The kind of oil used in a pump is also a major factor. If the oil is fire resistant, that can lower the chances that lubrication problems will cause the pump to run too hot.
- Workload – Consider how hard the pump works. Under the best conditions – running with clean oil at 1,200 rpm for less than 42 minutes an hour – you can probably expect the pump to last for about 20,000 hours. If the pump runs for 55 minutes every hour at 1,800 rpm, and you use a special purpose oil, then the lifespan will probably be about half that amount.
Again, there’s no tried-and-true method that will tell you how long your pump is going to last. The best thing you can do is to check the pump at certain milestones. If, for example, the pump runs under the ideal conditions mentioned above, inspect it after 12,000 hours. If everything looks good, check it again at the 15,000- and 17,500-hour marks. Whatever you do, avoid pushing the pump too far. If you do, that can lead to a failure that results in costly downtime.
