How Can You Tell if You Need a New Hydraulic Pump?
Any time a hydraulic machine doesn’t produce a normal amount of power, the first assumption is that there’s something wrong with the pump. In most cases, workers will remove the pump and take it to a repair shop if they can’t fix it in-house. In some instances, the decision will automatically be made to simply replace the pump as quickly as possible.
But there are some relatively simple ways to troubleshoot a pump without having to go through the time and hassle of taking it apart. Here are some fast, easy tests that will tell you whether or not the pump is the problem.
- The flashlight test – This only takes a minute – or even less. All you need to do is open the drain port and look inside with a flashlight. If you see pieces of metal, such as shavings or chips, or you can see other types of wear, then you have a pump issue.
- Rotating the shaft – When you try to turn the shaft of the pump with a pipe wrench, do you feel any sort of vibration? Does the shaft move easier than it should? Then you probably have a bearing or rotary group failure that will necessitate a pump replacement.
- Air test – If you have a gear pump, seal the outlet with a cloth. Next, blow compressed air into the inlet using an air gun. If you notice air moving through the drain or suction ports, that’s a sign of an internal pump leak. You’ll probably need to either have the pump replaced or repaired.
