Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinders
Telescopic hydraulic cylinders are the powerhouses driving industrial applications throughout the world. At Gorilla Spares, you’ll find a wide selection of cylinders made by manufacturers who are just as passionate about customer service as we are. When you buy from us, you can rest easy knowing you’ll receive a part that’s not only 100 percent interchangeable with parts you’re already using, but will also stand the test of time.
Why Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinders are So Important
If you use an 85-4402-235 Pin Mounted Cylinder or an S85DC-66-190 Pin Mounted Cylinder, or, for that matter, any other type of telescopic hydraulic cylinder, you know how durable and reliable they can be. They’re perfect for situations that require the application of a powerful linear force across an extended distance. Conventional rod-type cylinders are just as strong, but they’re often too long to be used within a limited space.
Telescopic cylinders, on the other hand, are much shorter when fully retracted – yet they have long stroke capabilities. That makes them the preferred choice over rod cylinders in many instances.
Take a dump truck, for example. Many companies require their trucks to repeatedly drive from the pickup site to the dump site, travelling across roads and highways in the process. If they’re outfitted with rod cylinders, the dump body won’t be able to return to its normal horizontal orientation once the cylinder is extended. If the body remains in an elevated position, it can’t traverse roads safely. There would be too much of a risk for colliding with objects such as road signs, overpasses or electrical wires.
Telescopic cylinders take that risk out of the equation. When they fully retract, the dump body goes back to its normal position.
Maintaining Your Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinders
Since you obviously want your cylinders to last as long as possible, you’ll want to make sure you take the time to maintain them properly. Here are just a few of the ways to do it.
- Rotation – Rotating your cylinders will help you avoid downtime. Have some spare cylinders on hand that you can switch out regularly. That way, you’ll know you’ll have fresh cylinders – even if you put them through extreme workloads. This will also be a good time to check to see if they need new seals.
- Inspection – Once you take out a cylinder, inspect it thoroughly for any signs of corrosion or wear. If you see corrosion, that could mean there’s too much moisture in your hydraulic system. Pitting could mean corrosion, but it could also be a sign of physical damage. Also, if your see varnish on the cylinder, that may be an indication that your oil is running at too high a temperature.
- Oil – Contaminated oil is one of the main reasons a hydraulic system fails. Make sure you have high-quality filters, and consider installing a pop-up indicator as well. It will tell you when the filter has become clogged.
