Why Telescopic Cylinders are the Right Choice
If you have a dump truck, you’re probably used to operating it in confined spaces. The truck probably has to go from the load site to the dump site, traversing roads and highways in the process. Telescopic cylinders make it possible for dump trucks to do both.
The reason is that these cylinders act much like a telescope – which is how they get their name. When you extend a telescope, you see that it’s really not much more than a set of metal tubes. As you pull it out, the tubes get progressively smaller. The same principal applies to a telescopic cylinder. As the cylinder lifts a dump body, the largest tube comes out first, and then the smaller ones follow. These tubes are also known as “stages.”
The telescopic nature of these cylinders allows a dump truck to work in a small area. They’re perfect for applications that need a long amount of “stroke,” or extension, but don’t have a lot of mounting space. Telescopic cylinders can easily lift a dump body to an angle of 60 degrees, even in a confined area.
Unlike conventional rod cylinders, telescopic cylinders retract in a way that allows the dump body to return to its normal state. With a conventional cylinder, the body would stay tilted. As you might expect, that could be a serious problem if the truck should encounter any sort of overhead obstruction on its way to or from the dump site.
Picking the Right Cylinder
Not only do we sell replacements for parts such as the FC5.5-3-136 Trunnion Mount Cylinder, the 85-4402-235 Pin Mounted Cylinder, and many others, we also have a team of experts who will make sure you get the right cylinder for your specific application. Here are a few tips to help you determine what kind of cylinder you need.
- Load demands – Telescopic cylinders handle forces from 500 PSI all the way up to 3,000 PSI. You’ll need to know the amount of pressure your dump truck exerts in order to determine the best cylinder. We can help you do just that.
- Mount type – Pivoted mounts are used when a dump body needs to move in an arc, while straight line mounts are best for loads that need to move up or down, or back and forth.
- Environment – What kind of environment will your cylinders encounter? Stainless steel, for example, is good for a wet environment because it resists corrosion.
