Tips for Maintaining Hydraulic Cylinders
It’s important to keep your hydraulic cylinders from failing when you need them most. Here are our suggestions for maintaining them and avoiding downtime:
- The majority of hydraulic cylinder failures are caused by contaminated oil in the cylinder. Install high-efficiency filters in your hydraulic system to ensure that clean oil is entering the cylinder. Check the filter regularly to prevent clogging and keep debris from getting to the inside of the cylinder. A differential pressure gauge or pop-up indicator can tell you when a filter is clogged.
- Exposure to heavy moisture, either ambient or within the fluid, can lead to corrosion and the failure of your entire hydraulic system. Inspect the condition of the rod for corrosion, pitting and uneven wear. Rod corrosion can lead to damage of the seal. When the cylinder is in pieces, take the opportunity to replace all seals. Uneven wear of the rod is cause by misalignment, which can affect the entire cylinder and result in significant damage. In many cases, a corroded and damaged rod can be re-chromed or polished to refinish it.
- The brackets, clevises, rod eyes, ball joints and other connections to a hydraulic cylinder are almost as important as the cylinder itself. When a pivot pin or clevis is worn, you may experience jerky, inaccurate motion and vibration in the joints of the cylinder. This will cause misalignment, which could lead to rapid wear or significant damage.
- It may seem okay to leave your hydraulic cylinder outside, but storing it indoors in a cool, dry area with the rod fully retracted will add to its longevity.
