Front End Loaders & Cylinders
A front end loader is a type of tractor, usually wheeled, sometimes on tracks, that has a front-mounted square wide bucket connected to the end of two booms (arms) that scoops up loose material from the ground, such as dirt, sand or gravel, and moves it from one place to another without pushing the material across the ground.
Until the 1960s, most construction equipment, including loaders, cranes, and excavators, relied on winches and cables. Hydraulics transformed equipment design and made the equipment far more productive, far more cost effective, and much more durable.
Hydraulic cylinders, for example, are ruggedly designed so they can be used in different applications and environments. They are ideal for use in harvesters, loaders, tractors, bulldozers, excavators, trenchers and their attaching tools. They can also be used to operate the gate controls of hydroelectric stations. In shipbuilding, they can be used in steering mechanisms, transportation equipment, and hoists.
The most common types of cylinder are tie-rod cylinders and welded (or mill-type) cylinders. Tie-rod cylinders are typically designed for maximum operating pressure of 3,000 psi. Their advantages include ease of assembly and maintenance, but they are not generally as strong as welded cylinders. Welded cylinders are designed for higher pressures of 5,000 psi or more and are preferred in more-rugged applications such as presses, steel mills, and offshore settings in harsh environments.
Cylinders also have different mounting options, including centerline lug, flange, extended tie-rod, and pivot. Pivot mounted cylinders include mounts like clevis and trunnion and are used when a load has to be moved through an arc. Straight line mounted cylinders include rear or front head flange and foot mounts and are used when the load has to be moved in a linear direction.
