Telescopic Cylinders in Brief
Telescopic cylinders are most closely associated with dump trucks, but they’re also found in equipment such as tractors, garbage trucks and more. They’re superior to conventional cylinders in many ways, the most important being they extend much larger. Like the telescope from which they get their name, telescopic cylinders are made of a series of tubes, known as stages, that nest inside of each other. The larger stages extend, followed by the smaller ones.
This leads to a great deal of pressure on the smaller ones, which makes choosing the right type and size of cylinder very important. The smaller stages typically experience as much as 3,000 PSI of force, compared to the larger stages, which usually undergo 1,000 PSI or less. The reason the larger stages experience less force is that they’re used to start a dump body or other piece of equipment moving upward. The smaller stages are where the real heavy lifting takes place.
