About Hydraulic Cylinders
Hydraulic cylinders are a vital part of many different types of machinery, and they make it possible to easily move and lift the heaviest of items.
Comprised of a steel tube, a rod, a steel tube, a piston with a rod attached that sticks out of one side (or both sides for a double rod cylinder) and a few nuts and bolts, they provide immense power that is utilized by every tractor, truck, bulldozer, and crane to dig, lift, push, haul, dump, and crush.
Hydraulic cylinders are available in different styles that can be mounted in several different ways. The three most popular types are tie-rod, welded rod and telescopic.
Tie-rod: Tie-rod hydraulic cylinders use high strength threaded steel rods to hold the two end caps to the cylinder barrel. Small-bore cylinders typically have four tie- rods, while large bore cylinders may require as many as 16 or 20 tie-rods to retain the end caps under tremendous force. Tie-rod cylinders are used in many industrial and heavy-duty manufacturing applications.
Welded rod: Welded-body cylinders do not have tie rods. The barrel is welded directly to the end caps. The body is narrower and often shorter, which enables them to fit better into the tight confines of equipment, Welded-rod cylinders are commonly used in construction equipment (bulldozers, excavators, and road graders) and material handling equipment (forklifts, telehandlers, and lift-gates), as well as in oil rigs, cranes, and large off-road vehicles for above-ground mining operations.
Telescopic: Telescopic hydraulic cylinders are also called multi-stage telescopic cylinders. They are constructed like a telescope and consist of a series of tubular rods called “sleeves” that are each progressively smaller in diameter and nest inside of each other. They are used in various types of equipment, including construction equipment such as roll-off/roll-on trucks, transfer trailers, dump trucks, and garbage trucks. They can also be used in common machinery and agricultural equipment.
