Hydraulic Cylinders – A Boon to Production
At one time, many types of equipment, such as cranes and excavators, needed cables and winches in order to work. When hydraulics came on the scene in the 1960s, however, these machines not only became much more productive and durable, they also became a great deal more affordable.
Hydraulic cylinders are ideal for a host of applications. Not only are they found in bulldozers, harvesters, tractors and more, they’re also used in hydroelectric stations (to operate gate controls) and ships (hydraulics are used as hoists and also found in steering mechanisms).
What Type of Cylinder Do You Need?
There are two main kinds of cylinders – tie-rod and welded. Tie-rod cylinders operate at a maximum of 3,000 psi. They’re very easy to assemble and maintain, but they’re not as strong as welded cylinders, which can handle pressures of 5,000 psi or higher. Welded cylinders are better for more heavy-duty environments, such as steel mills and presses.
Another important consideration when choosing a cylinder is the direction your load needs to be moved. If it needs to be moved in a linear direction, then you’ll be better off with a straight-line mounted cylinder. If the load needs to be moved along an arc, you’ll need a pivot-mounted cylinder.
