A Brief Look at How Telescopic Cylinders Work
Telescopic cylinders get their name from the way they work. Like a telescope, these cylinders are made of different sizes of steel tubing. The tubes get successively smaller, so that they can nest inside of each other. The barrel, also known as the main, has the largest diameter. The smaller sections that “telescope” are known as stages, with the smallest stage known as the plunger.
The barrel is the part of the cylinder that moves first. Once it completes its stroke, the next-largest stage moves, then so on and so on until the cylinder is completely extended. When the cylinder retracts, it moves in the opposite manner. The plunger moves first, and then the rest of the stages follow suit.
Why Choose Telescopic Cylinders?
Telescopic cylinders are perfect for providing a long stroke from a compact original position. Since they can retract as much as 40 percent from their original length, telescopic cylinders are excellent for applications where you only have a limited amount of mounting space.
One such example is a dump truck, which often has to operate in tight spaces. In many instances, an operator will have to tilt the dump body as much as 60° so that its contents can completely empty. Once emptied, the body has to move back to its original position so that the truck can safely navigate roads without striking overhead objects.
If a dump truck were to be outfitted with a conventional, single barrel, rod-type cylinder, the operator wouldn’t be able to move the body back to its original horizontal position. Even if the cylinder were to be completely retracted, its length would make it impossible to return the body back to where it needs to be. As a result, the truck would not be able to safely travel just about any type of road.
Telescopic cylinders provide the solution to that problem. Our parts can replace several Custom Hoist telescopic cylinders, including the 85-4402-235 Pin Mounted Cylinder, the 74-4401-135 Pin Mounted Cylinder, and several others.
