Telescopic Cylinders – The Basics
Telescopic cylinders are so named because they act on the same principle as a telescope. Like a telescope, these cylinders are made of different sizes of metal tubes that nest inside of each other. These tubes, which are also known as stages or sleeves, get smaller as the cylinder extends. The largest stage extends first, and then each successive stage extends afterward.
During retraction, the smallest stages retract first. Once this happens, the larger stages begin to move. This movement continues until all stages return to the barrel, or main tube.
One of the most important advantages of a telescopic cylinder is that it offers a large amount of stroke, or extension, but it can be used in a confined environment. Dump bodies typically use these types of cylinders.
Telescopic cylinders come in one of two forms. Single-acting cylinders use hydraulic force to extend, and then an opposing force, such as gravity, to retract. Dump trucks and dump trailers are perfect examples of pieces of equipment that use single-acting cylinders. Hydraulics lift the body of the truck or trailer, and then gravity brings the body back to its original position once the contents have been emptied.
A double-acting cylinder is much like its single-acting counterpart, but with one major exception – it uses hydraulics to both extend and retract. You’ll commonly find double-acting cylinders in garbage trucks.
Even though most people associate telescopic cylinders with heavy-duty machines such as dump trucks and garbage trucks, they’re also great for other applications as well – for example, agricultural equipment.
