History of Hydraulics in Construction Equipment Design
Hydraulics has been around for a very long time.
In Imperial Rome, water-powered mills helped produce flour and timber. In Colonial Britain, water power was used to extract lead from tin ore, which many years later evolved into the hydraulic mining used during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s. In 1795, Englishman Joseph Bramah invented the hydraulic press and used hydraulic power to pump beer from cellars into the taps at British public houses.
Until the 1960s, however, most construction equipment, including cranes and excavators, relied on winches and cables. The adoption of hydraulics transformed equipment design and made the equipment far more productive, far more cost effective and more durable.
In 1919, C.L. Best introduced the Caterpillar® Best 60 Tracklayer. It would become not only the best-known of the company’s track-type tractors but also the largest tractor of its era.
From the end of the 1960s through the 1980s, Caterpillar® expanded its product lines to include hydraulic powered equipment, such as hydraulic excavators, backhoe loaders, motor graders, off-highway trucks, wheel loaders, and agricultural tractors.
