A Brief Look at Telescopic Cylinders
A telescopic cylinder is basically a type of actuator. One of the main advantages a telescopic cylinder has over a traditional cylinder is that it can extend a great deal longer. They usually contain at several tubes that nest inside of each other. They then extend, much like a telescope.
There are a lot of ways in which telescopic cylinders are used, but by far the most popular applications are dump trucks, as well as vacuum and garbage trucks. When the dump bed needs to move, the cylinder moves in an arc-like motion. This requires some sort of pivoting mount, such as a Trunnion mount. As the cylinder extends, the diameters of the different tubes (also known as “stages”), get smaller and smaller. As a result, the pressure on the smaller stages increases. That makes it very important that you know exactly what size of cylinder you’ll need. This will ensure that it will be able to provide the amount of force needed to lift the dump body.
The first stage of the cylinder, for instance, may experience a force of less than 1,000 PSI. This is all that’s needed to get the dump body moving upward. As the dump body moves higher, that can put as much as 3,000 PSI worth of force on the final stage.
