Lengthen the Life of Your Hydraulic Equipment
There are a lot of things that can go wrong with hydraulic equipment, but many users only check oil levels and change filters. Properly maintaining your hydraulic equipment is essential for productivity. Here are some common mistakes that will affect both machine performance and service life:
Oil changes: Changing oil based only on hours in service, without any consideration of the actual condition of the oil, is not wise. If, however, you continue to operate with degraded oil or depleted additives, you could shorten the service life of every other component in your hydraulic system. The only way to know when the oil needs to be changed is by performing an oil analysis.
Filter changes: Similarly, if you change filters based only on a schedule, it may be too early or too late. The solution is to change them when their dirt-holding capacity is used up, but before the bypass valve opens. Continuously monitoring the flow (pressure drop) across the filter is the best solution.
Running too hot: Would you continue operating an engine that is overheating? No. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for hydraulic systems that get too hot. The fastest way to destroy hydraulic parts, seals, hoses, and the oil itself is to operate the equipment above the safe maximum operating temperature.
The wrong oil: The most crucial component of any hydraulic system is the oil. Not only is it a lubricant, it is also the means by which power is transferred throughout the system. When you use an oil with a viscosity that’s too high for the climate, the oil won’t flow properly or lubricate adequately. If the viscosity is too low, it won’t be able to maintain adequate lubrication on the hottest days of the year. Be sure to learn how to choose the right oil.
