What are Teach Pendants?
Industrial robots can handle a wide range of manufacturing processes, such as material handling, loading and unloading, welding, painting and coating, and assembly of components. To perform each application, however, they must be programmed, and teach pendants are the most common devices used to accomplish this.
Teach pendants are handheld wire or wireless devices that operators use to remotely control a robot’s movements and to program applications. They can also be used to recall the robot’s command history and to quickly test or troubleshoot problems.
Pendants display the robot’s commands and enable those commands to be edited. The device may contain buttons, switches and a keyboard, or may feature a touchscreen to make navigating more user-friendly. A common feature is an emergency stop (e-stop) button, a large red button that can used to immediately stop the industrial robot if it malfunctions during teaching.
With a teach pendant, you can remotely program a robot, issue commands to tell the robot to do things, or teach the robot to perform specific tasks. You can walk alongside it while it operates and use the teach pendant to provide it with commands and feedback. You can use the controls on the teach pendant to relay information to the robot about cycle times, speed, functionality, and interactions needed with any other machinery. You can also operate the robot from a distance. Teach pendants may include specialty features tailored to particular applications, such as robotic surgery or robotic manufacturing.
