Partner-Vendor: Akaliko North America
Akaliko North America, the premium brand in replacement hydraulic cylinders for over 15 years, provides top-quality telescopic cylinders to world-class mining and construction firms for use in construction equipment, such as roll-off/roll-on trucks, transfer trailers, excavators, dozers, loaders, backhoes, graders, garbage trucks, and dump trucks.
The company’s heavy-duty replacement cylinders and telescopic hoist cylinders are designed to be 100% interchangeable with many brands, including Caterpillar®, Komatsu®, Hitachi®, Volvo®, Hvya®, Hyco®,Custom Hoist®, Parker®, Mailhot®, Muncie®, and others. They operate flawlessly and reliably even in overload-environments.
All Akaliko cylinders are manufactured using high-quality alloy seamless steel pipe, gantry type linear electroplating, and premium Parker sealing components. This ensures the highest performance, rod protection, and corrosion resistance, and adds up to a product that can withstand the harshest environments and provide many years of dependable service.
Common Types of Hydraulic Cylinders
There are two common types of hydraulic cylinders – single-acting and double-acting.
Single-acting hydraulic cylinders only have pressing power and rely on springs, other cylinders, or the momentum of an attached load to push the piston back in the other direction.
The more widely used double-acting cylinder uses hydraulic power to both extend and retract. It has pressing and pulling power and is generally controlled with a joy stick control. It is a more powerful, alternative to the single-acting design. You will know it is a double-acting cylinder if it has a port at each end.
Repairing Hydraulic Cylinders
Cylinders are less complicated than other types of hydraulic components and are relatively easy to repair. Of course, the amount of repair work will depend on the extent of the damage to the cylinder and on the cost and availability of a new cylinder. A few common reasons for repair include:
Contaminated Fluid: Hydraulic fluid contamination can cause premature rod seal failure. Foreign particles that are inadvertently introduced into the hydraulic fluid can scratch and score the interior of the cylinder and eat away at critical seals and fittings. This will eventually result in failure and damage to other hydraulic system components.
Damaged Seals: The seals in a hydraulic system can be damaged by physical abuse or by contaminated fluid and affect the ability of the cylinder to maintain the correct internal operating pressure. Unless the damaged seals are replaced, performance will degrade over time as the seal damage becomes more pronounced.
Piston Rods: Damaged piston rods or rod bearings are the most common cause of rod seal failure. The usual causes of such damage are poor alignment between the cylinder and its load, resulting in side loading; or a bent piston rod, resulting from the use of an undersized rod in a thrust application.
